Getting published seems to require patience, persistence, and a bit of organization (the most basic spreadsheet for me). Sometimes I scroll through Submittable looking for ideas and then write something that fits. Other times I write the story first, then hope to find a publication who will take it. Oh yeah, and I have to actually sit down and write.
Victoria Falls (250 Words)
My flash fiction story “Victoria Falls” was recently published in the Beyond Words Literary March 2022 issue. When I saw their call for a 250-word, selfie-themed story, I wrote this one right away. After sending it to friends for review, I submitted it and, a few months later, learned it was selected for publication. Now, it is accompanied by beautiful artwork by Blandine Broomfield.
Art Swap: 2 Essays in 4 Weeks
Brace Yourself (1,000 Words)
In January 2022, a friend collected a group of creatives and asked us to produce something, anything. We traded and had another 2 weeks to respond to someone else’s work. First, I wrote “Brace Yourself” (pg 26), a true story about growing up in Tahoe and confronting the one animal I am least prepared to encounter.
Out in the Open (1,000 Words)
Two weeks later, I wrote “Out in the Open” (pg 40) as my response piece to the artwork produced by Jesse Shofner. It’s an homage to my “quiet lurking into the dark secrets of womanhood.”
I’m Encouraged, Thank You
Many of you shared extremely kind words of encouragement and support after my last newsletter. I want to say thank you. I appreciate you and I am grateful that you’re here with me. My (our) journey of re-education continues (but sometimes I write other stuff too). Stay tuned!
