The Judges Comments
“Being a Woman is Like Making French Onion Soup is brilliant, well written, cleverly constructed, and resonant. We all adored your voice and knew it was a clear winner. I love the use of ‘you’ which is instructional but also personal. Your essay is a perfect example of a successful hermit crab! The ending made me tear up. You are so talented. Keep up the excellent writing!
What is a Hermit Crab Essay?
I asked the same thing. Turns out, a Hermit Crab Essay is a nonfiction style where a writer adopts an existing form to contain their writing. In my case, the recipe from Joy of Cooking became the shell for my soft, squishy, vulnerable crab thoughts.
