I took a class at UO titled “Trees Across Oregon” and the Professor, Whitey Luek, called each tree an ‘individual’ when introducing us to them. It really changed my view of all the trees and plants that surround us.
I loved Braiding Sweetgrass, on so many different levels. And I am going to use the thoughts in this blog when I think about my language around rivers in my next book! (Fiction this time)

I love this idea…and such a beautiful post. Do you know about the ecocide movement? Folks in Europe trying to get legal protection for the environment and make ecocide a crime. Different approach but rooted in similar philosophy of caretaking of nature…
Yes, thank you! I have heard some rivers are getting legal personhood, which means they can sue others like coorporations for environmental degradation. I'll look into the term ecocide, I hadn't heard that yet.
