Meghan, another thoughtful and idea generating article...Thank you. I do not remember if you were still in middle school(in the old school) when the "Big Tree" in the middle of Tahoe City was taken down. I was given a big round from the tree and Doug built a cabinet for the round upstairs in the hall. I had students make a big topo map out of cardboard that we placed inside the cabinet. Alas, we moved to the new school and whomever was determining what to take, decided the tree round and topo map were not necessary -- just as we were getting ready to attach more local history to the rings...sigh...Your article stirred the memories of that tree and all the tree lightnings, Santa Claus meetings, plow driver swearing, and stories stored in wood. Thank you for the memory.

Hi Nancy, I was in the 3rd grade, I believe, when the Big Tree was cut down. I watched from my friend's dad's office nearby. I still have my Christmas ornament (a tiny round of a branch) and I used to have a chunk that I'd picked off the ground to memorialize it. I didn't know about your topo map, that is so amazing! And what a shame that it wasn't saved... This is what happens to old things and memories if people don't work hard to preserve them... Thanks for reading and for your comments. I hadn't thought about the Big Tree in a long time either.

Meghan, today I am time traveling through essays prior to the time we met on Zoom. This essay and its companions are now companions in my pondering. As a natural resources student in a university school of forestry back in the 70's, trees offer insights; a single tree could be a lifetime of study and insight. I will be back later to talk about seeds, I want to ponder this more.
